1980 Arcade Games – Video Domination

1980 arcade games proved that the gaming market would become huge worldwide in the years to come with no signs of stopping. This, of course, was extremely evident in the release of the highest grossing game of all time. This was also heralded the first mascot character. Pac-Man was an international phenomena that also ushered in the maze chase genre, introduced power-ups, featured cut-scenes, and opened gaming to female audiences. Pre-1980 arcade games showed off their tech prowess and imagination through games such as Pong and Space Invaders. However, 1980 games showed the world how much money was to be made in this arena.

The Rise of Technology

To see how far we have gone in the realm of video-gaming, all one must do is to look back to the 1980’s to see how far we have come. 1980 arcade games pave the way for standardized gaming for decades to come. Namco released another contestant in the arena of 1980 arcade games. Rally-X became the first game to introduce a bonus round an feature multi-directional scrolling. Universal releases Space Panic which many cite as being the first platform game. Nintendo releases Radar Scope which features a mock 3D third person perspective. Atari releases Battlezone which was later used for US military training (with a few upgrades, of course. These are only a few of the gaming advances that were introduced into 1980 video games.

Pac-Man is King

Even after all of the above mentioned gaming advances in other 1980 arcade games, Pac-Man remains the best in its category. It took traditional gaming to that point and not only introduced many never seen before features, but it crossed retail lines by having the first mascot character from gaming in history. There were Pac Man lunchboxes, Pac Man plush toys, Pac Man notebooks, Pac Man posters, Pac Man TV Shows. Namco took its place as the grandfather of arcade gaming. They showed us not only how to constantly innovate and make anew, but also how to cross sell your innovation through several retail markets. It was because of 1980 arcade games that we see the video game market as we do today.

A Foreshadowing of Things to Come

In the coming years and decades, companies would take Namco’s example and use it as the basis for all of their future projects. Namco’s plan was the golden template. Simply put, 1980 Arcade-games set the standard.

Here Is How You Can Be a Healthy Gamer

Gaming once took the world by storm, and has continued to remain a constant source of attraction, and even obsession, for many people. While everything is good in moderation, how do you satisfy your craving for continuous gaming, and still remain healthy? Keep reading to find out how.

• Know how to put first things first – Gaming only become unhealthy when it starts to creep into and disrupt other areas of your life. No matter how hardcore your gaming addiction is, it can still remain a healthy passion instead of becoming an unhealthy obsession, as long as you remain clear about your priorities. Certain things like family and friends, a full time job, and health, should never be compromised upon.

• Take care of your body – You can remain a healthy gamer so long as you do not let your passion throw you off schedule. Gaming late into the night, or all through until sunrise, may be acceptable every once in a while. However, when that becomes the norm, and you begin you overlook your healthy habits in order to continue gaming, then that spells trouble.

• Be an active gamer – This is a very important technique. Gaming on your consoles for hours on end can cause you to slip into the trap of leading a sedentary lifestyle. While it is a good thing that your brain is kept active by the gaming, it is essential to keep yourself physically active as well. This can be achieved by taking short breaks at regular intervals, and using these breaks to take a walk, or to do a couple of exercises.

• Stand tall – While most games that are played on the computer require the gamer to be seated, it would be fun to try gaming with consoles so that you can stand when you play. This is an exercise by itself. Also, you can shuffle your feet this way and that to remain physically active when you are seriously gaming.

• Drink to the game – Of course, we do not mean alcohol! It would be a healthy practice to take care of your body’s fluid requirements, by drinking water at regular intervals when you game. Fresh juices or other healthy drinks are also a good choice. This, instead of the common junk of chips and fast food that we normally opt for, will kickstart you on your journey to be a healthy gamer. It is one of the important things to remember.

Minecraft – Introduction to Redstone

If you have spent any length of time within the Minecraft world, you will be familiar with the common mineral, redstone. Redstone is the “wiring” in Minecraft used to connect one contraption to another, your power source within the game.

How do you get it? Naturally, of course! You can mine for redstone ore underground as with most materials in Minecraft. That ore will turn into redstone upon breaking it with an iron pickaxe or better. However, you can also acquire it from killing a witch, looting a temple in the jungle, or trading with a villager.

Once you have your redstone in hand, you are ready to experiment with its’ possibilities. At the most basic level of gameplay, if you need a little portable light within the game, all it takes is redstone and a stick to craft a redstone torch. Want to provide constant light to your Minecraft home? Combine redstone and glowstone to make a lamp, keeping the darkness at bay… and all of the creatures that come with it.

Redstone is used for powering various sorts of gadgets. You’ll want to be familiar with several fundamental items. In the trigger category you find buttons and levers, as well as pressure plates. Buttons send a redstone signal upon being pressed, while levers function more like light switches. A pressure plate each side of a door can allow it to open as you enter and then close behind you, triggered by your weight as you step on and off again.

Two kinds of pistons also exist in the Minecraft world: regular and sticky. Regular pistons push a block one step forward and then leaves it there, whereas sticky pistons attach to the block and can thus push or pull it. You can use those to make doors, elevators, secret entrances and so on.

Repeaters, as you might guess, repeat the redstone signal: one placed after the first fifteen blocks of redstone will extend your signal’s reach for another fifteen blocks.

So, what can you do with all of these buttons, levers, pressure plates, pistons and repeaters? The sky is literally the limit. You might decide to make piston-controlled waterfalls, secret trapdoors, music machines, clocks, and even rollercoasters. If you want to get really fancy, try assembling a number of gadgets and contraptions into a Rube Goldberg Machine. Feeling lazy? Redstone can even power up automatic farming and mining machines as well.

Redstone can also enhance the brewing of potions. Combining redstone dust and a water bottle will give you the Mundane Potion, while adding the dust to a number of other potions (e.g. Potion of Night Vision, Water Breathing, or Invisibility) will increase their duration.

As you can see, redstone will provide the power source for many of your Minecraft creations and adventures. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination!

How To Play Video Games

The obvious answer is no, you shouldn’t, but at the same time it does raise questions about what we are doing as a society and what we are missing out on. Instead of going and achieving dreams and accomplishing goals we are sitting in front of a YouTube screen watching others enjoy themselves. A good example of this is a YouTube star that goes by the name of PewDiePie. PewDiePie is famous for his videos where he will play video games and make comments about them.

Sounds like a fun little hobby, but for him it is a full-time job where he raked in over $7 million dollars in 2014 himself and at one point was purchased by Disney. Now what does that say about a society when instead of playing video games we now watch other people have fun playing them. It is odd that we have the need to watch someone accomplish their goals or dreams and never actually accomplish any of ours. Another good example is how important celebrity gossip has become in our society (An easy pun on this article). Of course you must have heard of the Kardashians, or maybe a hundred other celebrities who you have heard of, but know nothing about. What is our strategy, why do we sit and eat up all of this information when it has nothing to do with us in our daily lives?

We want to accomplish something, but by talking about all of this nonsense nothing is actually being accomplished. Maybe we should stop talking, complaining, or making a mockery of things that do not pertain to us and start dealing with stuff that does. By doing this we may actually be accomplishing what we want to do instead of eyeing up what other people are accomplishing. At the same time, sure some people do like making jokes of other people that they do not know, or complain about them and they do receive benefits. Looking back at the Shia LeBeouf video, there are pun videos that have received tens of millions of views. “Shia LeBeouf – Just Do It” is a complete joke on itself. It is entertaining and funny with a bunch of stupid motions thrown in. That is what we need. We need something that is entertaining to watch, yet at the same time the video to be motivating. While it is a joke to itself he is doing what he wants and he is trying to get other people to do it too through the power of motivation. So instead of watching other people achieve what they want through YouTube and other means, go achieve yours. JUST DO IT!

Multiple Games And Multiple Mash-Ups

Mario has become a global icon to the likes of Mickey Mouse. This is no lucky shot though because to this day Mario is always a top contender for a game of the year award on any dedicated video game website. Over the years, unlike his competitors (Sonic, Toe Jam & Earl, and Boogerman) he was able to evolve through the years. In many ways Mario is Nintendo spanning across hundreds of games, dozens of genres, and selling over a billion of copies worldwide. Interestingly enough the top ten rated video games include Mario three times, not including the originals when released.

That is not Nintendo’s only celebrating mascot, much like Disney, Nintendo thrives on their variety of characters. They have Link a sword wielding hero from “The Legend of Zelda” series, Star Fox a brave space pilot from the “Star Fox” series, Samus an alien fighter from the Metroid Prime series, Donkey Kong a giant ape from the Donkey Kong series, and many more. It is insane how many characters that Nintendo does own and to this day they are still creating more. All of these characters have been in multiple games and multiple mash-ups that show them competing with one another. These mash-up happened years before the Avengers hit movie theaters, showing that Nintendo is ahead of their game in more ways than one. They have been releasing new consoles at around a 5 year span going from the Nintendo Entertainment System, to the Super Nintendo, to Nintendo 64, to Gamecube, to Wii, now finally to the Wii U. Each experience has been different and fresh letting the players play the games in a brand new way.

The games were fantastic and the consoles were improvements over one another. It is fun to describe the consoles and talk about the games, but the only way to actually understand all of this is to play a Nintendo console. Years after the release of the first Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo is still hitting homeruns to this day. They are fun to play, families will get together around a television set just to play some of their favorite mascots. This is something that cannot be said about the competitors. If Nintendo keeps this innovations going they will be creating games for the next century and onward when we are finally introduced to fully interactive 3D worlds. Do not be surprised if Nintendo is behind this innovative technology.
